National Workshop on  “Machine Translation: From Lab to Users”

20-21 July, 2011 (CDAC, Noida)

Workshop Overview and Objective

In recent years there has been considerable research and development work in machine translation area. Varying degree of performance has been achieved with different MT paradigms (RBMT, KBMT, EBMT, SMT, HMT, MEMT) in the Indian context.  These have found applications as a personal MT to individual users primarily as assistance in translation or for personal comprehension. However, the MT technology is yet to penetrate the Indian translation industry and the Indian society in general.  The workshop is an attempt to understand this gap between the academic research and the actual users. On one hand we plan to deliberate on the gaps in the methodology that make the MT systems in the current form difficult to adopt by the translation industry and identify means to bridge this gap. On the other hand, we also plan to understand the cognitive aspects of human translation so as to incorporate them into MT system design. Understanding how humans translate and how humans evaluate a given translation in terms of fluency and comprehensibility, will hopefully pave ways in designing automated post-editing and evaluation techniques. The ultimate objective of the workshop is to examine ways in which MT systems can be made maximally useful in real life translation. and localization.
