Design & Development of UHF RFID Reader

The Design & Development of UHF RFID Reader based on the Intel R1000 chip, which is highly integrated, high performance UHF reader radio chip that brings unprecedented capabilities and cost effectiveness to UHF readers. High integration lowers design complexity, reduces reader size, cuts manufacturing costs and increases reliability.

The project is a complete UHF RFID Reader module designed and developed from initial stage i.e. from PCB designing to firmware development. This project is identified by CDAC to meet the mandate of the DIT funded project “National RFID Programme”, jointly awarded to C-DAC Noida, IIT Kanpur & SAMEER Mumbai. The aim of this project to promote RFID technology In India by means of awareness in industries & institutions, research & training.

UHF RFID Reader will be consisting of three hardware modules as following.
(1) Power supply module
(2) Microcontroller module
(3) Transceiver module ( or Radio board)

1) Power Supply Module
This module will act as a power supply unit for the reader as a whole. The specific voltages used in this whole design are 1.8V, 3.3V and 5V.

Power supply PCB without components.

2) Transceiver Module
This module is the heart of the system with major components as INTEL R1000 chip, Balun and Dielectric Band Pass Filter. Antenna Ports for transmission and reception of signals are available on this module.

3)Microcontroller Module
This has ATMEL’s AT91SAM7S256 with ARM7 core as microcontroller . It will support the total firmware of the system which includes the Boot up, the mode of work of the reader, configuration setting of the registers etc.

UHF RFID Reader will work with the following features.

1)  EPC global Gen 2 and ISO 18000-6c with full anti collision and DRM
2)  MMCX connectors supporting Monostatic and Bistatic Modes
3)  5 VDC +- 4% supply voltage
4)  Operating Temperature -20 degree Cel to +60 degree Cel.
5)  Processor Atmel AT91SAM7S256 clocked at 55 Mhz
6)  RFID ASIC Enhanced Intel R1000
7)  Flash On 256KB

Achievements: This project is currently in the development phase.
